Do not start with “What brand is this?” Start with “What object is this?”
1. Classify the intended format
Decide whether it is a wall sign, flange sign, hanging sign, pump plate, pole-sign face, curb sign, window card, clock, thermometer, lighted can, channel letter, trade sign, dealer panel, directional sign, or another commercial format. Format determines what construction and mounting should exist.
2. Identify the substrate and image method

4. Read the entire front
Transcribe brand, product, slogan, price, address, phone number, dealer imprint, trademark line, patent text, union label, and maker mark. Tiny wording can date a company address or link a sign to a known campaign.
5. Read the back and edges
Study oxidation, enamel overspray or coverage, lithographer printing, seams, rolled edges, brackets, mounting shadows, drilled holes, labels, repaint, and artificial aging. The back should make sense for the front’s claimed age and use.
6. Separate four questions
